The Memphis Tigers are entering their final week of fall camp. With less than two weeks until the opener vs. Chattanooga, head coach Ryan Silverfield addressed injuries, depth chart positioning, and the newest addition to the roster.
Injuries
Silverfield said senior safety Kourtlan Marsh will miss the entire 2025 season with an injury.
“He had surgery last week, and you feel for him,” Silverfield said. “I think he was going to be a defensive captain for us that the players loved, the community loved.”
Junior linebacker Cade Law will also be out for “a short period of time” Silverfield said. He does not expect it to be season-ending.
Offensive Depth Chart Update
Silverfield mentioned names at multiple positions that are in line to win starting jobs on Memphis’ depth chart. Starting with offensive line, senior Chris Adams will be the left tackle.
“Just a tremendous young man that I think has a chance to be a high draft pick and an elite-level talent,” Silverfield said.
FIU transfer Travis Burke is in line to start at right tackle. Burke started 22 games over two seasons with the Golden Panthers.
Malachi Breland (LG) and Parker Mitchell (RG) will fill both guard positions, while Yakiri Walker and Austin Gentle continue to battle for the starting center job.
“I’m pleased with it. I think we got guys that can move around different spots,” Silverfield said.
Silverfield said the wide receiver group will “be a little bit by committee and that’s okay.”
“It’s not that none of them can play, it’s because we got seven that we feel really comfortable with right now,” Silverfield said.
Silverfield also mentioned Bryce Anderson and Christian Russell as tight ends who have “done some good things” throughout camp.
Backup Quarterback Battle
Highly touted true freshman AJ Hill and Arrington Maiden continue to battle for the QB2 position behind starter Brendon Lewis. Silverfield said he and offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey have yet to make a decision on who will be the backup.
“We still got a couple more days before we even have to sit there and say if B Lew loses a shoelace, who’s going in,” Silverfield said. “I feel very comfortable with both of them.”
Defensive Depth Chart Update
Silverfield said Memphis has depth on the defensive line. He mentioned Pooda Walker, Taylor Burton, and Rayyan Buell as standouts. Another name mentioned was Tennessee State transfer Jalen Bell.
“I’m just telling you write that name down,” Silverfield said on Bell. “If he can stay healthy, I think he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with.”
While there are different players still competing for safety positions, Silverfield does feel comfortable with the cornerbacks.
“Chauncey Logan, he’s been more impressive than I thought,” Silverfield said. “Him and Omarion Cooper. I think those two are kind of solidifying themselves.”
Cortez Braham
Nevada transfer WR Cortez Braham has started practicing with the Tigers. He automatically becomes the most experienced player in the receiver room.
“We’re trying to leave him at one wide receiver position,” Silverfield said. “We’re going to continue to see his growth.”
Silverfield was clear that Braham will dress for game one, but it is not yet clear what that will look like.
“Been pleased with a lot of things from camp,” Silverfield said. “We’re still 12 days away from that first game and we are not a finished product.”
