Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery is entering his seventh season in the NFL and third with Detroit. Entering this season, Montgomery has 5,641 rushing yards with 53 touchdowns combined between the regular season and postseason.

In 2024, the Lions were the No. 1 seed in the NFC before falling to the Washington Commanders in the NFC divisional round. Montgomery rushed for 775 yards with 12 touchdowns in the regular season as he shared the workload with Jahmyr Gibbs.

In 2025, the Lions are once again expected to be a Super Bowl contender, and a big reason is the stellar play of the offensive line, something Montgomery knows a lot about.

In an exclusive interview with Athlon Sports, Montgomery spoke about what it's like to run behind such a talented offensive line.

“For me, it makes my job so much easier," Montgomery said. "I got some great guys up front. They are amazing."

The Lions' starting offensive line features former Oregon Ducks star Penei Sewell, who was the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and has three trips to the Pro Bowl in four seasons. Graham Glasgow is entrenched as the center, and ex-Georgia star Tate Ratledge is joining the fold after being selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Veteran Taylor Decker is coming off the best year of his career after making the Pro Bowl, although the group was dealt a big blow with Frank Ragnow's sudden retirement.

Last season, the Lions had just 13 holding penalties and 15 false starts on the offensive line, which was among the fewest in both categories.

"Being able to have those guys care about you as much as they do and put everything on the line for you, it makes me realize these guys care about you and the only option is to give them all you got," Montgomery continued about his offensive line.

Montgomery is Active Off the Field As Well as a Scouting Ambassador

Off the field, Montgomery is also doing his part despite being a big piece of the Lions' success.

In the interview with Athlon Sports, Montgomery spoke about his time with Scouting America, where he was an Eagle Scout. Montgomery was previously named an ambassador forScouting America, and the Lions star spoke about the lessons he learned from that experience.

"The way that I carry myself as a man, I think it all stems from Scouting," Montgomery said. "If it had not been for Scouting, I probably wouldn’t have been who I am today, so I’m very appreciative of what Scouting has done for me.”

Montgomery also hopes kids can "do both" when it comes to Scouting and sports, just like he did: "You won't regret it," he said.

Moreover, the Lions star also revealed the lessons from Scouting that he still uses in his daily life as well as on the football field.

"Just staying consistent; blocking out the exterior noise that isn’t important," Montgomery said. "I think Scouting taught me that. Me being able to assess and break down certain problems and not losing my mind trying to figure out what is the right thing to do.”

While Montgomery has had a successful career thus far in the NFL, he didn't hesitate to speak about the impact Scouting had on his life.

“Scouting is more important than what sports have done for me, and I’d say that and I mean it with everything that I say," Montgomery stated.

So, although he is a big star on the gridiron, Montgomery is also passionate about Scouting and what it could do for young kids.
