When the Jacksonville Jaguars used their first-round pick on Travis Hunter, they knew they were getting one of the most electrifying and versatile players to ever step onto a football field.

The former Colorado star, Heisman Trophy winner, and two-way phenom was drafted with visions of him terrorizing opponents on both sides of the ball—something almost unheard of in today’s NFL.

But just two weeks into his first professional training camp, the question that always hung over Hunter’s transition to the league is back in focus: can he handle the workload?

Jaguars Take Precaution With Rookie Two-Way Star

According to Ian Rapoport, the Jaguars may hold Hunter out of their second preseason game against the New Orleans Saints as he deals with what head coach Liam Coen called an “upper-body injury.” Coen stressed that the decision would be precautionary, but admitted Hunter’s status is “up in the air” heading into the weekend.

Through 15 training camp practices, Hunter has logged a staggering 188 snaps on offense and 176 on defense—a level of usage that would push even the most durable NFL veterans to their limits. He did not participate in Thursday’s walkthrough, signaling that the team is taking no chances with their franchise’s newest weapon.

Hunter, who took college football by storm with his ability to dominate as both a wide receiver and defensive back, has long faced questions about whether such a unique role can be sustainable over a grueling 17-game NFL season.

While the Jaguars remain confident in his ability, this early precaution is a reminder of the physical toll that comes with playing both ways at the highest level.

For now, the team insists there’s nothing to be concerned about. But with Hunter’s unprecedented workload, this will be one storyline worth monitoring all season long.
