Manchester United started their 2025/26 Premier League season with a 1-0 loss against Arsenal on August 17 at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils maintained a ball possession of 61% and had seven shots on target against Arsenal, who had three shots on target. Despite their dominating stats in the game, Man United were unable to open their scoring, and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to save the sole goal conceded by them in the 13th minute.

Despite his blunder, Man United head coach Ruben Amorim backed Bayindir and mentioned being ‘happy’ with all his goalkeepers in the squad.

"I'm happy with the three goalkeepers. He [Bayindir] chooses to get the ball, but he's getting pushed. That is my feeling when I see the play. You choose to push a player [out of the way] or to get the ball in that moment. He needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chooses to push players and let the ball pass,” as per ESPN.

Man United’s performance against the Gunners pointed out their need to make a change in front of the goal. Their first-choice goalkeeper, Andre Onana, who was left out of the squad in the opening match, has also been on the receiving end of criticism all throughout last season for his errors on the pitch that cost the Red Devils’ odds in the games.

While they have made four signings in the summer transfer window, Man United are yet to sign a goalkeeper for the season, and here are three of their top potential transfer target choices in the role.

David de Gea

David de Gea arrived at Old Trafford from his boyhood club from Atlético Madrid in 2011, and after a 12-year-long tenure at the club, the Spanish goalkeeper parted ways with deal expiring, and negotiations over a new contract fell through.

De Gea then joined Italian club Fiorentina, where his current contract is valid until the summer of 2028.

Earlier this month, the 34-year-old shot-stopper returned to Old Trafford with Fiorentina for a preseason friendly game, and since then, De Gea has been heavily linked with a permanent move back to Man United.

During his over a decade-long career at Man United, De Gea registered 545 appearances for the club, maintaining 190 clean sheets. The club legend remains very popular among the fans, and his return to the Red Devils could be a great boost to the squad.

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Gianluigi Donnarumma has recently announced his decision to part ways with Paris Saint-Germain, with one more year left in his contract at the French club.

Donnarumma’s announcement led to several top clubs, including Man United, expressing their interest in acquiring his signature.

Reports have suggested that the Red Devils have earlier enquired about the 26-year-old, and their interest has now once again revived. Donnarumma joined PSG from AC Milan in 2021 and has since been instrumental in the Ligue 1 side’s success over the seasons, maintaining a total of 81 clean sheets in 251 games.

Being widely referred to as one of the best goalkeepers in the world currently, Donnarumma would make a great addition to Amorim’s squad at Old Trafford.

Senne Lammens

Senne Lammens is another name that has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer. The Belgian goalkeeper is currently contracted with Antwerp till June 2027.

Back in July, Lammens addressed the speculations of him potentially joining Man United and said,

"Manchester United are one of the best clubs, yes. But you never know. It could also be a different club, or who knows, I might stay here. In any case, I try to keep my feet on the ground. When teams like that come along, I think you've earned it,” as per Sport Witness.

"I certainly have enough confidence in myself. I think the most important thing is that my future team, whenever they arrive, has a plan in place. Ideally, that means playing immediately, but it's also possible I'll have to take a step in between. As long as there's a plan, it doesn't matter whether I'm ready for the next step or not. Everyone has their own career, their own path. Even if I don't take the right step right away, I'll get there."

Lammens’ efforts on the pitch have also made him a transfer prospect for other clubs, including Inter Milan, who have been reported to be very keen on making a move for him. The 23-year-old contributed to 10 clean sheets in 44 appearances for Antwerp last season.

It remains to be seen if and who Man United decide to add to their squad as their new goalkeeper for the 2025/26 season.
