The Carolina Panthers are signing quarterbackBryce Perkins to the roster. This move is in response to Andy Dalton going down with an elbow injury during the preseason game against the Houston Texans.

Perkins played for the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League (UFL) for the last two seasons. This past year, the former Virginia star threw for 1,342 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions in seven games with six starts. Bryce Perkins led Michigan to the UFL Championship game and was named league MVP.

Perkins has previous experience in the NFL. The 28-year-old joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 as an undrafted free agent and was with the team when they won the Super Bowl during the 2021 season. Perkins made his NFL debut in 2022 and played in five games with one start. In those games, Perkins completed 55.9 percent of his passes for 161 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Bryce Perkins talks about his success in the UFL

Before the UFL Championship game, Perkins spoke to former NFL head coach Jon Gruden about the key to his success this past season. “I think it’s preparation and post-snap read,” he said. “My comfortability post-snap seeing and making decisions has gone a lot quicker. I think that’s just over the time, even over the years, something I realized that this is something, area you got to get better at it. You got to start seeing things because it never stays the same. And trusting the guys, going out there and understanding that you can make every throw and you don’t have to rely on your legs all the time.”

Perkins will likely see some action during the Panthers’ final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. When Andy Dalton suffered an elbow injury, third-string QB Jack Plummer took his place. Bryce Young is the Panthers’ starting quarterback but isn’t expected to play in the preseason finale.

The Panthers enter the 2025 season with high hopes after winning two of their last three games to close out the 2024 season. Young finished the year strong, throwing seven touchdowns and zero interceptions during the three-game span.
