Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya returned to the lineup on Wednesday for the first time since May 25. The 26-year-old has a .280 batting average with four home runs and 25 RBI on the season, but he had been out almost three months due to a left oblique strain and was just activated from the 60-day IL.

Amaya was inserted into the No. 9 spot against the Toronto Blue Jays and went 1-for-3. However, Amaya landed awkwardly on first base after hitting a single in the top of the eighth inning.

Amaya went down in considerable pain and wound up being carted off the field with a towel over his face in an emotional scene.

After the game, manager Craig Counsell revealed that Amaya was going back on the IL due to a left ankle sprain, although he admitted it looked much worse initially.

“Left ankle sprain, X-rays were taken, negative on the X-rays, which is great,” Counsell said. “A little concerned, obviously, at the time of the injury. It’s swollen up pretty good already. It’s an IL."

On Thursday, the Cubs concluded the series against the Blue Jays, and Amaya spoke on the latest setback.

"It's frustrating," Amaya said, via Marquee Sports Network. "Coming out of the IL and things like this happen. All I want to do is be out on the field and help the team win, but it's sad that this happened."

Veteran Carson Kelly had been doing the heavy lifting with Amaya out. The former Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks catcher has appeared in 80 games with a .273 batting average entering Thursday.

Once again, it was Kelly who got the start behind home plate with Amaya back on the IL in a tough blow for the team.

Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw also spoke about how difficult it is to see Amaya injured again.

“We saw his reaction and it was really hard," Shaw said after Wednesday's game, per Matt Betts of MLB.com. "We’ve seen everything Miggy’s done to get back here, and he’s an unbelievable guy, someone we love having here. He’s a huge part of this team. To see him go down, get carted off like that, it was really hard and we feel for him a lot.”

With Amaya back on the IL, the Cubs called up top prospect Owen Cassie, and the outfielder got the start on Thursday against the Blue Jays.
