The last 18 months have been a whirlwind for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice. The star pass catcher was expected to have a monster season last year following an inspiring rookie campaign that saw him develop into Kansas City’s No. 1 option on offense.

However, the season felt doomed before it even began when Rice was charged with multiple felonies for speeding and causing a six-car crash on Mar. 30, 2024. To make matters worse, Rice suffered a season-ending knee injury early in the year.

In cases where the United States justice system is involved, the NFL typically waits until their investigation and court proceedings have concluded to take action.

They took this same route with Rice, and now that he has finally been sentenced by the courts, the league has a date set to determine his punishment as it pertains to football.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Rice has a hearing with the league on September 30 to dish out his suspension. There have been rumors that the Chiefs are expecting a suspension of 4-6 games, so if their estimation is correct, the timing of the hearing is awkward at best.

Typically, the NFL tries to resolve these situations so the player can serve their suspension at the start of the season. However, the date that the league has set will be after Kansas City has already played four games.

While it is encouraging that they’ll have Rice for the start of the season, it could be problematic to lose such a valuable piece in the middle of the year. The Chiefs will need to rely on sophomore receiver Xavier Worthy and hope for a Travis Kelce renaissance to supplement them while their top dog is gone again.

One positive that could arise from the situation is that Rice will be healthy and rested for Kansas City’s inevitable playoff run.

Consistently playing 20 games or more each season like most of the roster is incredibly taxing on the body, so adding a fresh, elite receiver for Patrick Mahomes to throw the ball to late in the season is a unique advantage.
