The Toronto Blue Jays have the best record in the American League entering Thursday’s slate of games, owning a 70–51 record and a 4.5-game lead in the division over the Boston Red Sox.

Toronto has continued to surge in August despite missing a key veteran leader, George Springer, who suffered a concussion in late July and has been on the 7-day concussion list since August 1.

The 35-year-old right-handed slugger had been experiencing one of his best years as a Blue Jay, with many doubts entering the season about his ability to produce given his age and drop-off in 2024.

Through 101 games before the injury, Springer posted a .291 batting average, .889 OPS, 18 home runs and 12 stolen bases. He had been especially hot in his 11 games after the All-Star break, batting .432 with a 1.133 OPS and two home runs.

George Springer Takes Next Step Toward Return

Springer had been ramping up baseball activities both with the Blue Jays and Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, and he finally passed MLB’s concussion protocol on Wednesday.

Early Thursday morning, an update surfaced via Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith that Springer had been slotted at designated hitter for Buffalo, marking his first return to action since the injury. His return to Toronto’s lineup may not come immediately but is a possibility for this weekend.

"George Springer set to DH at AAA today. Possible he’ll need a bit more rehab time after that but a return to Blue Jays is on the table for this weekend if all goes well."

Blue Jays Hoping Springer Can Spark Final Push for AL East Title

This comes at a critical time for the Blue Jays, who will benefit greatly from his eventual return to the lineup. Springer has been an irreplaceable piece of Toronto’s core since his arrival in 2021.

The Blue Jays brought Springer to the organization after he experienced an exceptional seven-year career with the Houston Astros, highlighted by a 2017 World Series MVP.

Toronto hoped that his arrival would aid a once-young core of Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with his postseason experience and veteran leadership.

Through five seasons with the Blue Jays, Springer has accumulated 594 hits, 105 home runs, 311 RBIs, and 66 stolen bases. If he can make his return during the upcoming homestand, he’ll shift focus to helping bring home a division title to Toronto for the first time in a decade—and the first of his Blue Jays tenure.
