The 2025 college football season is quickly approaching, and with a fresh slate, ESPN analyst Greg McElroy is particularly high on a program that was considered a laughingstock just a year ago.

After going just 2-10 in 2024, the Florida State Seminoles went out and made a flurry of offseason moves, which included bringing in 23 players through the transfer portal, with hopes of seeing more production.

McElroy Says Florida State Could Bounce Back

Despite playing the No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 1 and No. 10 Miami Hurricanes in Week 5, McElroy revealed he believes the Seminoles could start the season hot.

“If you really look at their schedule, it is entirely possible that they are 7-1, 6-2 after the first eight weeks of the season,” McElroy said. “So Florida State, I think, has a chance to bounce back in a big way, but they’re going to have to win some of those difficult matchups at home against Miami, against Virginia Tech, and then try to take care of business against somebody on the road there in the meat of the schedule.”

That would be a complete turnaround for Florida State, and if the Seminoles were sitting with a 7-1 record that deep into the season, they would be fighting for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Florida State's 2025 Quarterback Change

Much of the Seminoles' failures from 2024 falls on the quarterback room, featuring DJ Uiagalelei, Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek. Combined, they completed 179 of 355 passes for 2,164 yards, 11 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and a 104.5 passing efficiency rating.

That low productivity led Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell to the transfer portal, landing former Boston College Eagles quarterback Thomas Castellanos. He is expected to be the team's starter in 2025.

Last season for the Eagles, he was productive, completing 99 of 161 passes for 1,366 yards, 18 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 163.4 passing efficiency.

If Florida State is to achieve a 7-1 or 6-2 record to start the season, like McElroy believes is possible, much of the pressure rests on the shoulders of their new quarterback.

The Seminoles host the Crimson Tide at 3:30 p.m. ET Aug. 30 on ABC.
