Here is the stock report for the New York Jets following Saturday's 31-12 preseason loss at the New York Giants.
The New York Jets (1-1) had to be riding high after beating the Green Bay Packers 30-10 in Week 1 of their preseason slate. The Jets are trying to prepare theirselves for a 2025 season in which they can hopefully make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2010 and they had their latest test of where they stand by facing the New York Giants (2-0).
The Jets did not come away from Saturday's preseason game at the Giants with the result that they were hoping for as they lost to New York, 31-12. New York fell behind to the Giants 7-3 in the first quarter and it seemed like the Jets were unable to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball to counter what the Giants were doing throughout the game.
With players like cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive lineman Jermaine Johnson not playing, the Jets were going to be behind the eight-ball in terms of starting-level players being on the field. The Giants took advantage of that with players like quarterback Jaxson Dart leading the passing game. Here is the Jets' stock report following a disappointing loss to the Giants:
Stock Up: WR Arian Smith
Smith came into this preseason looking to make his mark amongst a wide-receiver group headlined by Garrett Wilson to lead the corps. Smith saw plenty of looks from the Jets quarterbacks and in turn, he was able to make some plays against the Giants' secondary.
Stock Down: RB Breece Hall
Hall is sure to be the starting running back for the Jets when the season starts, but with his contract extension lingering in the background, he would be best-served to play as well as he can in the meantime. Hall didn't have the worse performance that a starter could have in the preseason, but he looked less explosive when compared to players like Braelon Allen and Kene Nwangwu.
Stock Up: CB Qwan'tez Stiggers
Stiggers drew the start with starting corner Sauce Gardner being held out of the game and he took the chance to make a big play in front of the home crowd. Stiggers picked off Russell Wilson in the endzone to prevent the Giants from scoring on that particular drive, something that could back in the back of head coach Aaron Glenn's mind moving forward.
Stock Down: Jets Pass Defense
While the preseason is the time for teams to work out how they will operate on both sides of the ball, the Jets could not be happy with how the pass defense performed against the Giants on Saturday. New York allowed a combination of Wilson, Jaxson Dart, and Jameis Winston to throw for over 300 yards without posing much of a challenge to any of the signal-callers for New York.
Stock Up: WR Quentin Skinner
While Skinner is trying to do the same thing as Smith in terms of earning reps at the wide receiver spot during the regular season, Skinner has the extra task of trying to make the team coming out of training camp. The good news for Skinner is that he showed up when his number was called and made some nice plays against a solid Giants secondary.
Stock Down: QB Adrian Martinez
Justin Fields is going to be the starting quarterback when the Jets' regular season begins, but Martinez is competing with Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook to be Fields' backup. Martinez did not have his best performance against a Giants defense that can be tough on a quarterback and with just one preseason game left, he has to hope that he did enough to earn a roster spot.
