As Army Football continues its preseason preparations, Saturday’s scrimmage offered a solid look at both the promise and the areas for growth across the roster. From the defense’s steady development to the offensive line’s strong showing, there’s plenty for Black Knights fans to be encouraged about.
Senior linebacker Eric Ford was upbeat about the defensive unit’s overall effort, while keeping things in perspective with opening day on the horizon.
“The defense looks good, but we definitely need to improve before opening day,” Ford said. “Our linebacker crew is deep, and the young players are coming along nicely.”
Ford emphasized his personal approach heading into the season: stay focused and execute what’s asked of him.
“I just need to do the role the coaches give me and make sure I execute,” he said. “I’m very excited to go out there with my teammates and start the season.”
On the other side of the ball, offensive lineman Will Jeffcoat came away from the scrimmage feeling confident about the unit’s chemistry and readiness — particularly among the offensive line, known as the MOB.
“The scrimmage went well,” Jeffcoat said. “I feel blessed to be playing with guys like Brady Small and Henry Appleton. The MOB looks really strong — we shouldn’t miss a beat from last year.”
Jeffcoat also praised the leadership under center, noting the poise shown by each of Army’s quarterbacks.
“Whoever is in at QB does a great job leading the team,” he said. “For me, it’s just about focusing on execution, my stance, and staying low.”
With just a few weeks remaining before the season opener, the Black Knights are sharpening both sides of the ball — building on leadership, execution, and the strong identity that defines Army football.

GBK Scrimmage Analysis:
First let us point out that this was a scouted scrimmage. Meaning, the coaching staff used scouts to give the team’s 1’s and 2’s a look for Tarleton State preparation.
That being said, let’s look at what some of the defensive participants displayed.
FS, Collin Matteson showed he can tackle. Andon Thomas and Kalib Fortner played well at inside linebacker. One guy who continues to catch out attention is Bryson Banks, who showed up as he was out there running with the 2’s at Mike backer.
Noah Nixon played physical at Dog with the 2’s. It appears that the ‘D’ is slightly behind a little at defensive line … mostly due to injuries, but they will improve as those players get a few more reps the next couple of weeks.
There are a lot of freshmen that are the attention of the defensive staff, so stay tuned.
We will also be reporting on the offense via the 12th Knight message board, so stay tuned as well.
