Justin Fields puts up forgettable performance in second preseason game

The New York Jets are going to need more consistency from their quarterback if they want to show improvement in 2025.

The New York Jets could not have asked for a much better preseason debut from quarterback Justin Fields last week in the Jets' 30-10 romp over the Green Bay Packers. In his lone drive, Fields went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and a touchdown with zero sacks. Unfortunately, Fields was unable to string together two solid preseason games.

On Saturday night against the New York Giants, Fields played in two drives but failed to impress. This time, Fields completed just one of his five pass attempts for four yards and failed to find the endzone. Oddly enough, Fields has still yet to connect with Garrett Wilson, his former teammate who'd been hoping to reunite with Fields.

Make no mistake, this is not a call for the Gang Green faithful to panic. It was only two preseason drives for Fields and they came against one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. Even the best quarterbacks can send in some lackluster preseason stat lines. However, going from a solid debut to a messy second game is a concerning development. One of Fields’ biggest flaws thus far in the NFL has been inconsistency, resulting in rollercoaster seasons, and that doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon.

A good game here and there won’t cut it for the Jets in 2025, not if they want to have any hope of ending their 14-year playoff drought. If they’re going to return to relevancy in the AFC East, they need a quarterback that can guide a high-powered offense week in and week out. So far, Fields does not appear to be that quarterback.

Again, you never want to overreact to preseason games for good or for bad. But Jets fans would certainly have liked to see a better box score from their starting quarterback.
