Alabama redshirt junior Ty Simpson was officially named the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback heading into the 2025 season, signaling a change of guard at the position. Simpson has been a staple of the program for three seasons, but waited his turn and it has now paid off.
Simpson has played in 16 games over three seasons, where he’s completed 29 of his 50 passes for 381 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He was a five-star recruit (ranked No. 25 overall in his class) coming out of Westview (Martin, TN) in 2022 and is now the main-man in Tuscaloosa.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer discussed the decision to name Simpson as the starter during a media opportunity on Saturday. Simpson will be the second starting quarterback of the DeBoer era at Alabama, following Jalen Milroe.
“We knew where we were at at that point where we felt good about who should be the starter,” DeBoer said. “It just made sense after the scrimmage when we evaluated kind of the whole product we put on the football field. All the quarterbacks, I thought, came out there today and did a great job. It was the same thing last scrimmage. Specifically Ty, today, came out and executed the offense and just continues to be steady. Finds his time to make the plays and today he actually used his feet again.”
Simpson beat out Keelon Russell and Austin Mack for starting job
“That’s something that people probably underestimate when you go through the year with his ability to make plays and keep plays alive,” DeBoer continued. “I thought he was steady and consistent. Probably a higher completion percentage than he had last scrimmage, but maybe not quite as explosives. I think that’s attributed to our defense and what they did as well. Good, good both scrimmages for him and he’s continuing to make progress.”
Simpson beat out quarterbacks Keelon Russell and Austin Mack for the starting job. Russell was a five-star recruit (ranked No. 2 overall in the Class of 2025), while Mack was a four-star recruit (ranked No. 219 in Class of 2023) coming out of high school.
“Ty [Simpson] and Austin [Mack] get in the huddle and rattle off a play and they’re sharp and confident with it,” DeBoer said last week. “Keelon [Russell] is still learning these things, but he’s doing a great job. Progress is something that you hope for and he’s right there. Explosive opportunities and they’ve got the ball there. They deliver there and there’s been very few times where we haven’t thrown on time and weren’t confident with where we were throwing the ball.”
Alabama opens the 2025 season at Florida State on Aug. 30. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM on ABC.
