Skip Bayless Names Face of the NFL Without Hesitation

And, it is not Patrick Mahomes!

Skip Bayless Names Face of the NFL Without Hesitation originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

When talking about the face of the NFL today, many would point to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the rightful player to hold the title. Prior to him, it was Tom Brady.

Renowned sports commentator Skip Bayless, however, has a different opinion. In fact, he didn't even choose a player.

Bayless Names NFL Team Owner as Face of the League

In the latest episode of his show, Bayless made the rather bizarre claim that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is "now the face of the National Football League." He even went as far as to say that Jones is "beyond Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Mr. Taylor Swift (Travis Kelce)."

"Jerry Jones is the most famous-slash-infamous owner in sports history times 10," Bayless added. "As Ian O'Connor wrote the other day in The Athletic, Jerry is George Steinbrenner on steroids."

Bayless proceeded to highlight that Jones' presence and popularity have allowed the Cowboys to be the most valuable sports franchise in the world. For those not in the know, the team is valued at $10.1 billion as of August 2024, according to Forbes.

"I must admit, as much as I don't want to admit, a big reason for their value right now is Jerry Jones. Whether you can't stand Jerry or you get a kick out of his kooky southern fried quotes, you listen to Jerry Jones one way or the other."

Fans React to Bayless' Bold Jones Claim

Bayless certainly makes a good point about the Cowboys' marketability and value, both key traits needed to be the face of the league. There's a reason Dallas is called "America's Team," and there's no denying that the franchise is really popular.

However, being the face of the league extends beyond just popularity and marketing. Winning is essential, and that's where Jones and the Cowboys have failed — at least since 1995.

Many fans were quick to point that out to counter Bayless' claim.

"And he is the biggest reason why the Cowboys haven’t been to an NFC championship game in three decades," a commenter wrote. Another one said, "Jerry sucks, he's the reason that the Cowboys are bad. Jerry values style over substance. Fly Eagles Fly!!!!"

"Shut up skip no he is not!!!" a commenter added.

A follower remarked, "We don’t need products from the 1940s."

"Funny Skip, sounds like you’re saying. He’s well known now as a celebrity owner. Selling more myths than championships," a social media user added.

Of course the Cowboys will have another chance to prove their critics wrong this 2025 season. However, until they do so, it will be hard for anyone to believe Bayless' statement.
