Butler referenced a popular Will Ferrell character to describe his former boss.
Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler shared a playful banter regarding recent Heat-Nets trade originally appeared on The Sporting News
While Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler are vital to the Golden State Warriors’ success, they are still keeping tabs on what’s happening throughout the NBA. Hence, the 2017 NBA Defensive Player of the Year brought Butler into conversation when the latter’s former team, the Miami Heat, finalized a trade with the Brooklyn Nets.
Green reacted “Look what you’ve done Jimbo @jimmybutler” on an Instagram story after the Heat traded Haywood Highsmith and a 2032 second-round pick to the Nets for a protected 2026 second-round pick.
However, Butler replied, “Don’t put that evil on me ricky bobby! I had nothing to do with it! Let me live my offseason with my blonde weave in.” Ricky Bobby, a popular character portrayed by Will Ferrell, might pertain to Heat president Pat Riley’s competitive drive.
Coincidentally, Highsmith replaced Butler in the Heat starting lineup after the six-time NBA All-Star was suspended after walking out of practice. Butler’s behavior might have been triggered by the team informing him that he won’t start a January 2025 game against the Orlando Magic.
The situation led to the Heat trading Butler to the Warriors in a five-team trade that sent Andrew Wiggins to Miami.
Though Highsmith has become a solid rotation player for the Heat, this trade is a salary dump that puts Miami under the luxury tax. The Heat were within the luxury tax in the last two seasons, and going under it helps them avoid the repeater tax. Likewise, the Heat can still add two players to their roster because they didn’t get anyone in return.
Conversely, ESPN’s Bobby Marks tweeted that the Nets are still $22 million under the salary cap after the Highsmith trade and Cam Thomas’ free agent hold.
