Bill Self met with the media in Lawrence on Friday to touch on several topics.
Self opened up the press conference by providing the latest update on his health. It all started when he was hospitalized on July 24.
At the time, Self was experiencing what KU described as “some concerning symptoms.”
Self also underwent a heart procedure.
According to the release from Kansas, Self had two stents inserted during the procedure. He wasn’t feeling well on Thursday and later went to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.
Self, on July 26, was released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
“I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay there,” said Bill Self. “I feel strong and am excited to be home.
“Our team has had a productive summer and look forward to our batteries being recharged and prepping for this upcoming season,” he added.
On Friday, Self met with the media for the first time since being released from the hospital back on July 26.
“I actually did take three or four days off right after,” said Self. “But, no, I’m feeling pretty good. They’ve asked me and told me that I probably could have some improvements in my lifestyle and life choices, primarily with food and exercise, even though I know that you guys have never heard that they say that is beneficial to feeling good and living a healthy life.
“And so they’ve got me doing some stuff, but I’m probably doing about as well as you can do,” he added.
Self experienced a similar heath scare in 2023
This isn’t the first time that Self has had a health scare.
Self, in 2023, had a similar procedure done to the most recent one that took place in July.
In 2023, Self underwent a catheterization and had two stents put in to treat blocked arteries. He missed the Big 12 tournament and the NCAA tournament as a result of the procedure.
Self, on Friday, was asked how his most recent procedure compared to the one back in 2023.
“I’ve had more stuff going on that I haven’t gone public with what it is, and I’m not going to,” said Self. “The similarities are that I had stents back then, and I had stents this time. And there’s some other things around it that’s obviously different. But from a rehab standpoint and from where I am post where I was before, I actually think I’m better today than I was then.
“Like, I could coach a game tomorrow,” he added. “I can have practice tomorrow. And back then, because of some complications I had, they didn’t want me doing anything for a while. So from that standpoint, I feel like I’m much further along. If we practiced tomorrow, I’d be 100% out there.”
Self happy with how KU rounded out the roster late in the game
Like he does almost every spring and summer, Self made a splash on the recruiting trail when putting the final touces on KU’s 2025-26 roster.
Needing to add some key pieces to the roster late in the game, Kansas was able to do just that.
Nginyu Ngala (signed July 29), Kohl Rosario (signed June 24), and Paul Mbiya (signed June 25), the final three pieces to KU’s roster, could end up playing significant roles for Self’s squad this season.
When asked if he is happy with how evertyhting played out with the roster, Self had this to say.
“You want me to predict our record? You know something? There’s not one coach in America that would answer that question differently than, “Yes, I’m thrilled about everything now,” but who knows how it’ll play out,” said Self. “But I think we got better. We got more athletic, we got more depth, and you hit it on the head—we were able to get some guys later than maybe we had hoped to get them, but they ended up being the right guys.
“Add Kohl (Rosario) and Paul (Mbiya) late, and then with G (Ginyu Ngala), to me, he fills a need,” he added. “So, I like where we’re at. The thing about it is, if you’re going to err—because it’s an inexact science—you may want to err on the side of athleticism, or you may want to err on the side of shooting, or you may want to err, whatever. And I felt like we’re so much more physically athletic than we were last year. So to me, that excites me.”
