Out of a dozen scholarship offers, Southridge (Fla.) three-star quarterback James Perrone has a couple he’s especially gotten a feel for.
UCF and West Virginia are the most recent to offer. He also camped at Notre Dame and Louisville this summer and made a few other visits as well. Perrone isn’t sure when a decision will come. But he has zeroed in on what matters most to him: overall fit.
“When I’m looking for a school, the main thing is if I can see myself playing in that offense,” Perrone said. “I wanna see if the offensive coordinator is one I can play under, if I fit with him and just fitting in.”
As one of USF’s top targets in the 2027 class, the Bulls hope Perrone sees that fit with them. He played in a seven-on-seven tournament in June hosted by USF. Perrone and his team finished runners-up, which gave him even more opportunity to show off for those in attendance.
“I had a really good showing over there,” he said. “We went to the championship and I played good in front of the coaching staff the whole time. I definitely tightened up our relationship there.”
Perrone said he’s already been to USF three or four times and is working on finalizing a gameday visit this fall. He said he’s talked with multiple members of the Bulls’ staff, but has particularly established a bond with offensive coordinator Joel Gordon and assistant quarterbacks coach Hayden Kingston.
“I have a good relationship with them, honestly,” Perrone said. “We’ve talked for a while now. Sometimes, it’s same old, other times, I’m learning more about USF, especially with Coach (Alex) Golesh. He talked to me about that stuff.”
Perrone said Golesh has personally extended USF’s desire to land him. They had a lengthy phone conversation just a few weeks ago.
“Kinda just how they were happy to keep building a relationship with me and that kind of stuff,” Perrone said. “We just talked about a lot of things, how I’m high on their board. It was a long phone call.”
The other visit Perrone said he’s currently working on this fall, though a date has not been set, is to Virginia Tech. His last visit there was two years ago for camp.
“I think it’s a great place, honestly,” he said. “I love the coaching staff, the location it is, though I haven’t been as much. I think the traditions the Hokies have are awesome.”
Perrone said he isn’t ready to make a decision. But he does believe he’s pieced enough together to make what he considers an early commitment.
“I’ve definitely made a lot of progress,” Perrone said. “I definitely still have to talk with my coaches and family. But I might be doing an early commitment. I haven’t fully made that decision yet, but I’d say either before or after the season. I’d say it’s down to a couple of schools. I still have a decision to make. “
