The Phoenix Suns had a clear goal in mind as they entered the NBA offseason and it was to completely change their roster.

Of course, the Suns began their offseason by trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets and they later bought out Bradley Beal’s contract, officially ending their big three.

Now the only player remaining from their star trio is Devin Booker, who they signed to a massive contract extension this offseason, making him the focal point of their future.

Phoenix also made some notable additions to their roster this offseason as they acquired Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and Mark Williams and selected Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea in the 2025 draft.

Despite this, the Suns have a long road ahead of them to become a contender once again with Booker leading the way.

For Booker, he now has a ton of pressure on him and SB Nations’ Ricky O’Donnell recently ranked him among the NBA’s most overpaid players.

“I respect the Suns for wanting to keep Booker around for his entire career, but they will be paying a ton of money to do so when they could have flipped him for a huge haul of assets this summer,” O’Donnell wrote. “Booker’s newly signed extension will pay him $72 million per year in his age-32 and age-33 seasons. Now firmly in his prime on the brink of his 29th birthday, Booker is more of a fringe top-20 player than a fringe top-10 player. He’s never been quite special enough as a shooter or playmaker to emerge as one of the league’s true superstars, but Phoenix will be paying him like one well into the future. The Suns have no margin for error when it comes to building around Booker long-term, and it will be fascinating to see if they can pull it off.”

Booker is set to make $316 million over the next five seasons after he signed a massive two-year contract extension this summer.

While O’Donnell believes that Booker’s contract is too big due to him being a fringe top-20 player, Booker is one of the best shooting guards in the NBA and he has had success as the main part of the Suns before.

Of course, that came during the 2020-21 season where Booker helped lead Phoenix to the NBA Finals before they tore apart their roster to bring in both Durant and Beal.

Now Booker will once again be the centerpiece for the Suns with a new-look roster around him, though the Suns are still a ways away from being a contender once again.
