Joey McGuire is applying the finishing touches for Texas Tech as the squad heads into its second scrimmage. Part of applying the finishing touches is completing the offensive install. This is especially key with offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich getting plays learned and getting enough plays repped in practice.
“I think we’re right at like 102 (plays) with the three groups,” McGuire told the media Thursday. “Probably somewhere between 90 and 105 to 110 is all. Whenever it starts getting to where you’re saying ‘Okay, how do you get to 110,’ it’s having success on offense and continuing drives.
You want to stress the guys, you want to get good stuff on tape. Really attack the situations. The defense did a great job in a two-minute situation. We’ll have stuff like that again, get to those moments.”
Applying the finishing touches to the depth chart
The Red Raiders are around two weeks away from kickoff. That means it’s time for brass tacks and solidifying the two-deep depth chart. McGuire and the staff are applying the finishing touches to the depth chart. However, some battles aren’t entirely decided.
“I think there’s still going to be some battles going on going into the final week,” McGuire said. “You want to be closer and closer. The guys are starting to really step up.”
After a strong showing in the first intrasquad scrimmage, the running backs earned an even stronger trust from the entirety of the offensive coaching staff.
“There’ll be certain positions like the running back room, if I had to put out a depth chart out right here, right now, it would say ‘OR’ on all three of them. Like somebody’s gonna have to go out there and start but really, it’s no real matter who’s out there. They all have different packages too. How we’re using them and really trying to play to their strengths. We’re getting closer and closer to where you’re going to be able to put a depth chart together.”
