The San Diego Padres swept the San Francisco Giants in San Francisco in a huge series for both teams, going in opposite directions. This sweep for the Padres secured them the lead in the NL West, while the Giants made history not seen since 1940.
While the Padres' sweep of the Giants was incredible for San Diego, it tied a franchise low for the Giants. NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic shared on Twitter/X how the Giants' loss to the Padres stings even more than it does.
"The Giants lost 11-1." Pavlovic writes. "They've dropped 13 of 14 at home for the first time since 1940. They've scored five total runs during a five-game losing streak. They're 10 games behind the Padres and got caught by the Diamondbacks."

Not only did the Giants get swept by the Padres, but they also lost the series finale 11-1 and cemented a losing streak not seen since 1940. The sweep at the hands of the Padres was already tough, but the circumstances make it hurt more.
It's one of the worst losing stretches at home for the Giants, and it was cemented by a division rival in the Padres. They also allowed the Padres to surpass the Los Angeles Dodgers for the lead in the NL West, and fell into fourth place in the division.

Both the Padres and Giants made big moves in the middle of the season, with the Padres bringing in Mason Miller while the Giants landed Rafael Devers. But the two teams, since their trade pickups, have gone in opposite directions.
Ever since trading for Devers, the Giants have struggled so much that they sold at the trade deadline. Meanwhile, the Padres have been hot since the deadline and have taken first place in the NL West this late in the year for the first time since 2010.
A brutal series at the hands of the Padres has the Giants reeling. San Diego is one game up on the Dodgers after sweeping the Giants, while the Giants are 10 games back of the Padres in the West.
While they're 5.5 games out of a wild-card spot, their recent performances don't indicate a turnaround anytime soon. Not only did the Giants set unfortunate history amid getting swept, but it was at the hands of the division rival Padres, who are ascending in August.
