Boston might have a forgettable year.
NBA analyst projects shocking fall from grace for Celtics next season originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Boston Celtics are set for one of the most interesting seasons in the entire league.
This offseason has been a whirlwind for Boston. After winning the NBA title just over a year ago, the team decided to make some significant changes this offseason.
With a myriad of factors going into the Celtics’ decisions, they ultimately chose to move off of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis while letting Luke Kornet and Al Horford walk in free agency. With those moves effectively destroying the Celtics’ championship core, there are only a few notable names remaining in Boston.
Of course, Jayson Tatum is still around, but he won’t be on the floor next season as he recovers from a torn Achilles. With Jaylen Brown and Derrick White set to take on some much larger roles, the Celtics will learn exactly what they have in terms of star power around Tatum.
While Brad Stevens has still tried to build a roster capable of competing in the East, not everyone is sold on Boston’s chances of making the playoffs. In Bleacher Report’s recent article projecting win totals for each team, Andy Bailey projected the Celtics to finish 38-44, an unthinkable record for the squad after their past few years.
Boston hasn’t finished under .500 since the 2014-15 season, marking a decade of winning basketball. Add in the Celtics’ numerous conference finals runs and NBA title, and 38 wins seem crazy, even in a down year.
As Bailey explained, Boston’s frontcourt concerns and the unknown impact of Tatum’s absence are simply too much to put any faith in the Celtics next season.
