You ask, we answer. Sometimes we ask, others answer. And then other times, we ask, we answer.
Throughout the year, we will be asking and answering questions about various Ohio State teams, the players, and anything else on our collective minds of varying degrees of importance. We are now entering the third week of preseason camp, and the Buckeyes are beginning to turn their attention to the Texas Longhorns. So, as the team is hoping to wrap up position battles potentially after this Saturday’s scrimmage, in this week’s fan survey, we want to know how you are feeling about what’s going on in a few high-profile camp competitions.
Take a look at the two questions we have below, then scroll down below the article and vote in the survey. If you want to expound on your pick or write in an option that we didn’t include, feel free to hit the comments at the bottom of the page.
Question 1: How are you feeling about the quarterback competition not being decided?
From Dwayne Haskins vs. Joe Burrow to Kyle McCord vs. Devin Brown, we have seen all kinds of quarterback competitions during the Ryan Day Era in Columbus. But, for some reason, this one feels a bit different. Julian Sayin comes in as a marquee five-star prospect (and transfer from Alabama) while Lincoln Kienholz was the multi-sport South Dakota star.
Sayin was the player that everyone assumed would be the runaway leader in this competition, but the fact that Kienholz has made this a legitimate battle shouldn’t be too exciting. When Devin Brown and Air Noland left, Kienholz stayed for a reason. It wouldn’t have been surprising if he had entered the portal as well. If things went the way that most people expected, Sayin would start as a sophomore and junior, followed by Tavien St. Clair, meaning that there was no path to the field for Kienholz.
But by staying, it showed that the uber-athletic Lincoln was up for the competition, and he might just be working his way into being the starting quarterback for the defending national champions.
So, are you just happy that Day has multiple options at QB, or are you nervous that no definitive leader has emerged? Or are you a conspiracy theorist who believes that the Buckeyes actually do know who is going to start, and all of the conversations about competition are merely a smokescreen to confuse the Texas defense? Or do you not think it even matters who starts until OSU gets into the Big Ten season?
Question 2: What position battle are you most intrigued by?
While, for good reason, the quarterbacks are going to get all of the attention, there are a number of other position battles that I think are probably even more interesting as camp begins to wind down. What’s happening on the offensive line is incredibly intriguing to me with Austin Siereveld seemingly locking down the left tackle spot while transfers Ethan Onianwa and Phillip Daniels are battling for the RT spot.
Then there is what’s happening along the defensive line, where it seems like Larry Johnson and company have figured out their top four, but others are fighting for playing time as well. Lots of interesting stuff to look forward to in this second half of preseason camp.
