The Georgia Bulldogs are going to have a new look on offense in 2025 with Gunner Stockton at starting quarterback. With the change, head coach Kirby Smart is hoping to get more out of his wide receiver room than the Bulldogs were able to last season to help Stockton transition to starting.
So far in Fall Camp, Smart has been very happy with his WR room. In particular, he recently called them out for excellent leadership and effort in a recent scrimmage. That should give them something to build on.
“London [Humphreys] is one of our leaders,” Kirby Smart said. “He sets the tone each and every day. [Zachariah] Branch does a great job. He’s a passionate guy, he gives you great energy every day. He goes out and works hard. Dillon [Bell] has been running longer than anybody in terms of work ethic and doing things the right way. I mean, you can’t really look at that group and say, there’s just one leader. They lead by committee. There’s a lot of them in there that work hard and do what you’re asked.”
Statistically, Dillon Bell is the top returning wide receiver for Georgia. He had 43 receptions for 466 yards and four touchdowns. That was third on the team in receiving. Now a senior, Bell is hoping to become the premier receiver on the team. After him, London Humphreys played in 13 games last season for Georgia, snagging 15 receptions for 244 yards and two touchdowns.
Kirby Smart also hit the Transfer Portal to land Zachariah Branch. For the last two seasons, he’s been a star at USC. Last year, that saw him snag 47 passes for 503 yards and a touchdown. Now at a new school, he’s hoping to hit the ground running and become a leader for the Bulldogs this season.
“Even the young guys are,” Smart said. “They’ve got great examples to follow in those older guys. So, in the scrimmage, some good, some bad, right? We had a couple explosive plays. A couple plays I thought the receiver should have made, but I was very pleased with their effort.”
Kirby Smart reveals benefits of Georgia being a young team
The Georgia Bulldogs, undeniably, have a young team, and there are also challenges that come with that. At the same time, as Kirby Smart recently shared, there are also some benefits to having a young team.
“Energy. Enthusiasm. Non-complacency. That’s not to label old teams as that, but you don’t have that problem with young teams,” Smart said.
“Relentless effort, connection, rewarding a teammate, hand on a helmet, body language. It’s more than just how you play. It’s what you do between the snaps… I don’t know if it was lacking in previous years. I just know that we want it, [it’s] more rewarding. We’ve always had some form of it, but it’s the analogy of small campfires. We can have all these little small campfires, or you can have a burning inferno. We want a burning inferno. We want all of these campfires to come together and be 11 burning fires — not a couple of burning bushes over here.”
Georgia will open its season on August 30th against Marshall. Just two weeks later, the Bulldogs need to be ready for SEC play on the road against Tennessee.
