Taylor Swift couldn’t have told you much about football two years ago, but that all changed when she began dating Travis Kelce. Now the pop icon is completely bought in on the sport, of course supporting Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Her reaction to the team drafting receiver Xavier Worthy in the 2024 NFL Draft shows just how much of a diehard fan she has become. In her appearance on Kelce’s New Heights podcast on Wednesday, she told the hilarious story of how excited she was when she heard that news.
“Oh my god, I fell in love with it,” Swift said of becoming a football fan. “I became obsessed with it. I became a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, ‘We drafted Xavier Worthy!’ And my friends were like, ‘Who body snatched you? What do you mean we drafted Xavier Worthy?’ I was screeching. I couldn’t believe it.”
In fact, Swift even found out about the news before her boyfriend did. Kelce recalled her being the first person to tell him about the news, saying he was skeptical at first and then shocked to find she was right.
“You were the first person to tell me that we drafted the fastest man in the draft,” he said. “…I couldn’t believe it either. I was like, ‘Is she right? I’m gonna have to look this up. Did she get the wrong information here?’ But yeah, we traded up.”
It’s clear that Swift had been following the predraft coverage enough to know how big of a splash the Chiefs made by trading up to take Worthy. The Texas alum set the record for the fastest 40-yard dash time at the 2024 NFL Combine with a time of 4.21 seconds.
Worthy would go on to rank second on the team in receiving with 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns. And Taylor Swift was there in the stands to cheer him and the team on many times during his rookie season.
Expect much of the same from the pop star this season, as she should be a regular at Arrowhead Stadium once again. She’s working improving her knowledge of the game even more, as she’s been going over different defensive coverages with Kelce this offseason.
“We’re talking Cover 2, Cover 4, Cover 0, man coverage,” she said. “We’re learning. I continue to learn. I’m not ready to be an analyst right now, but give me 16 months.”
