With just over two weeks until kickoff, UCF head coach Scott Frost says the quarterback competition remains an open three-man race as the Knights prepare to host Jacksonville State on Thursday, Aug. 28.

In an interview conducted Monday with Fox 13 Tampa Bay’s Scott Smith for his College Caravan series, Frost spoke about the battle between Cam Fancher, Jacurri Brown and Tayven Jackson.

“Yeah, it’s not coach talk,” Frost told Smith. “I’ve got three guys that I think if we had to go into the year and they were our guy, I’d feel good about it. It’s unfair for us to just anoint someone and give them the job, so I want that to be settled on the field.”

Frost said he isn’t ready to name a starter yet and will continue to let the competition play out.

“All three guys have been doing good things, and we’ll take it as deep as we have to take it before we figure out who the right guy is.”

Asked what could still separate one from the others, Frost said consistency will be the biggest deciding factor.

“They’re all three making plays. You’ve got to make plays and avoid the negative plays and the catastrophic plays, and they’ve all taken their turns with that,” he said. “But at the end of the day, where we start might not be where we finish, but it’s going to be the guy that executes the offense the best, and we can trust to make plays without having any bad ones.”

Confident in the defense

Smith asked Frost which position group he has the most confidence in, and Frost pointed to the front seven, which features several returning contributors such as Nyjalik Kelly and Malachi Lawrence.

“Hopefully, we’re a good front seven on defense. I think we’ve got a lot of talent up there and some guys with some returning production, which is rare on our team,” Frost said.

He also praised the work being done by offensive line coach Shawn Clark and defensive line coaches Mike Dawson and Kenny Martin.

“I really think the o-line’s come a long way. Coach Clark’s doing a great job with them, just like Coach Dawson and K-Mart are doing on defense. So hopefully, we’re improved up front from where we found the team in January, and that’ll make everything work.”

The 20-minute feature includes plenty of insight, with additional interviews from quarterbacks coach McKenzie Milton, running back Myles Montgomery and linebacker Lewis Carter.

Smith’s College Caravan series travels across the Sunshine State as he’s also posting reports from Florida, Florida State, Miami and South Florida.
