Football Fall Camp Notes: August 13

The quarterback battle has no end in sight.... and other observations from the practice fields

Missouri Football fall camp drew one day nearer to its conclusion with a sweltering outdoor practice Wednesday. The media was able to see a portion of the practice, mainly special teams and positional drills. Here are a few things that stood out to me during the day’s session:

Offense

  • Sam Horn and Beau Pribula continue to split the first team reps during positional drills, switching who goes first from day to day and even one drill to another. The Tigers seem to be nowhere closer to naming Brady Cook’s successor, and I wouldn’t be shocked if the battle continues into the season opener against Central Arkansas.
  • Brett Norfleet had a nice route during a shot session of one-on-one’s today and looks fully ready to return and make an impact in this Tigers offense. It doesn’t look like there should be concerns over the potential of lingering effects from his injury last year.
  • Logan Muckey isn’t likely to play a major role on the field this season, but he still brought plenty of energy to practice; he was seen dancing around and was vocal during the sessions we saw, including yelling out “Ohhh!” after hauling in a long pass in the endzone.

Defense

  • We didn’t see much of the defense during the open sessions of practice, but Drey Norwood had a nice pass breakup in one-on-one’s against Marquis Johnson after the wide receiver high pointed the ball. The second corner spot may be up for grabs, but it’s clear Norwood is the top option at the position for the Tigers.

Special Teams

  • The team practiced receiving onside kicks early in the practice portion we saw, with Kevin Coleman and Marquis Johnson as the hands men in charge of safely recovering the ball. Illinois State wide receiver transfer Xavier Loyd was also utilized, though during the second set of reps. The drill went cleanly, for the most part, outside of one instance where Coleman fumbled the ball on the reception of the kick.
  • DeMarion Fowlkes and No. 31, likely Anthony Favrow, were seen practicing as kickoff returners. The two depth pieces are unlikely to serve as returners during the main regular season action, but it’s possible we could see the pair enter in some early season games if Mizzou takes a large enough lead.

Make sure to check back in Thursday for some of the top quotes from that day’s interviews with select members of the Tigers.
