Detroit Lions star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown made a highlight-reel catch during a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday.
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff lofted a pass to the back corner of the end zone during a passing drill against the Miami Dolphins defense on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Most receivers probably wouldn't have caught the ball, especially with the Dolphins' defender essentially locked on. But Amon-Ra St. Brown isn't most receivers.
St. Brown rose, reached over the back of his defender, and made a one-handed catch against a white Dolphins' helmet in the back corner of the end zone. It was the most impressive catch of the day during a joint practice with the Dolphins at the Lions' training facility in Allen Park, and one of several impressive plays St. Brown made on the day.
"Hopefully my feet were in. I don't know how the refs called that," St. Brown said after practice. "As long as the ball wasn't moving, I think I'm good."
For the record: The referee in front of the play signaled touchdown. And St. Brown celebrated like it was a touchdown, too, punting the ball in the air as part of his celebration.
The catch was impressive, but St. Brown was also active on blocks and route-running even when he wasn't targeted.
"It's cool to see a guy like that continue to go out here every day and do everything full speed, do all this blocking full speed," offensive tackle Taylor Decker said. "He embodies what our team is supposed to be about."
Entering his fifth season in the league, the 2021 fourth-round pick has already been named to three Pro Bowls and earnd first-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and 2024. And if the Lions' offense can shake its preseason sluggishness so far, St. Brown will likely be a huge reason why.
"It's going to take some time to get things figured out, but I think every day we're getting better," he said. "We haven't watched the tape yet, but from what I saw out there, it looked pretty solid for us."
St. Brown also shared some thoughts on rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa having a shoving match with Dolphins' cornerback Jack Jones, whom St. Brown remembered from growing up in Southern California:
"He's blocking, and that's something I feel like a a young guy, us older players respect that," he said. "That's just telling us when he's out there on Sundays, he's gonna put his life on the line, he's gonna block, go get that safety."
Though he also said he doesn't want to see fighting in a joint practice, he acknowledged that "it happens."
"You love to see young guys compete," he said.
St. Brown has been a security blanket for Goff over the past few years, hauling in 115 catches in 2024. He caught two of Goff's four completions during a round of passing drills against the Dolphins.
"I think (if) you give Jared protection, he's one of the best in the league," St. Brown said. "As long as he's in that pocket, he's gonna give us a ball that we can catch, and we're gonna do the rest."
