Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin offered an update after quarterback Aaron Rodgers appeared to suffer a calf injury in Tuesday’s practice. Per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Tomlin said there is “nothing of significance” regarding the injury and that Rodgers returned to practice without missing any reps.
Rodgers suffered the injury after being stepped on during a play and came away grabbing at his right calf. He was later seen getting a bag of ice wrapped around the calf before removing the ice and wrapping it up with a bandage.
Pryor noted that Rodgers was “not quite as fluid” on his first couple of drop throws after getting his calf wrapped. He also threw an interception on his last rep.
The update from Tomlin is certainly good news as it appears Rodgers won’t be held back at all after the injury scare. The Steelers are counting on the 41-year-old veteran to be their starter this season after he signed a one-year deal.
Rodgers brings many accolades with him, including four MVP awards and a Super Bowl victory with the Green Bay Packers in 2011, which ironically came against the Steelers. Now the team is hoping he can help them get back to the big game in 2025.
Injuries are often a concern with a quarterback his age, though, and Aaron Rodgers does have a recent history with them. He suffered a torn Achilles in the 2023 season opener but bounced back last season to play in all 17 games with the New York Jets.
It at least seems that this injury won’t keep him out at all, and the Steelers will hope for another season of full health out of the QB. They’ll kick off the regular season with a matchup against Rodgers’ old team, the New York Jets, on Sept. 7.
Aaron Rodgers: ‘I don’t give a shit’ about hate, doubters ahead of 2025 season with Steelers
Rodgers has been the most polarizing player in the NFL over the past couple of seasons. Now, as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, he doesn’t care what anyone has to say about him — the four time NFL MVP just wants to win football games.
“I don’t give a shit about that,” Rodgers responded to Pat McAfee during an appearance on his show, regarding anyone peddling doubt about whether he can still get the job done. It’s evident that legendary quarterback isn’t playing to make fiends, but to notch victories with his teammates.
It’s tough to blame Rodgers for his mindset. He’s proven to be able to get the job done, even at his advanced age — last season with the New York Jets, he passed for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions amid uncertainly with the franchise’s future.
In a more stable environment with the Steelers, he could rise above and lead them to the promise land. At least that’s what he’s hoping, and what Mike Tomlin and company are wishing for. That’s why Pittsburgh signed him to a deal worth $13.65 million and $10 million guaranteed.
