Handing out the New York Jets' report card for their preseason Week 1 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
The New York Jets defeated the Green Bay Packers 30-10 in Saturday's Week 1 preseason opener. After the offense struggled for multiple running practices, Tanner Engstand's side appeared to have worked out the kinks in their exhibition debut. Having analyzed the action, we've handed out a report card to every Jets unit.
Passing offense: B+
Starting quarterback Justin Fields only played one series, but was an efficient 3-of-4 through the air while leading a scoring drive. Backup signal-caller Adrien Martinez was effective, going 11-for-16 with 152 yards and a touchdown. Even Brady Cook was an accurate 6-of-8, meaning the Jets' three quarterbacks combined to go 20-of-28 for a completion percentage of 71.4%.
Rushing offense: C+
Donovan Edwards was the Jets' leading rusher, gaining 42 yards via nine carries. Both he and Braelon Allen averaged more than four yards per carry. On the flip side, Isaiah Davis and Breece Hall struggled, averaging 2.3 and 3.0 yards per touch respectively. The dual-threat Fields rushed for this unit's lone touchdown on the opening drive.
Pass defense: A
The Packers couldn't move the ball through the air with success. They played four different quarterbacks and Malik Willis finished with a team-high 39 passing yards. Starter Jordan Love was just 1-of-5 before being removed. Willis also lost a fumble. The Jets' defensive backs consistently won the battle.
Run defense: C+
Packers running back Amar Johnson rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown, including an explosive 39-yard score in the fourth quarter. That was against Jets backups, but it's still disappointing. The Packers didn't play their best running backs, but the Jets need to keep working on tackling drills.
Coaching: C+
Head coach Aaron Glenn was incredibly frustrated with penalties. The Jets were whistled for 10 infractions for 91 yards. Discipline has been a similar issue at training camp. Glenn must continue harping on the details to make his squad a better disciplined team.
