Texas high school football is a religion in the Lone Star State. While the state boasts a robust professional and college football scene, Texas high school football reigns supreme compared to other states.

There’s no better proof than having their top 31 teams within the nation’s top 100. Out of that number, here’s how Massey ranked Texas’s top 25 squads, ranging from defending state champions, traditional powerhouses and upstart powers.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. Duncanville Panthers

The Panthers were in position for a three-peat last season. Unfortunately, North Crowley dashed their hopes with a heartbreaking defeat in the Texas high school football Class 6A Division 1 state semifinals. Despite that loss, the Panthers maintained their consistency by clinching their ninth consecutive double-digit win season.

Duncanville will have another title shot in 2025, and their schedule will start with a September 5 home game against South Oak Cliff. The key players to watch from Duncanville are four-star edge rushers Kevin Ford (Florida) and Landon Barnes (Ole Miss), wide receiver Trenton Yancey, cornerback Braylon Edwards (SMU), and athletes Ayson Theus (TCU) and Zachery Turner (SMU).

2. DeSoto Eagles

After going undefeated in 2023, the Eagles failed to defend their state championship by losing to Longview in the Texas high school football Class 6A Division 2 quarterfinals. That loss settled DeSoto’s 2024 record to 11-3.

The Eagles return to action against Creekside on August 30. Four-star wide receiver Boobie Feaster (USC), four-star defensive lineman K’Adrian Redmond, three-star safety Markel Ford, and three-star edge rusher D.J. Rumph will lead the way for DeSoto.

3. North Crowley Panthers

After falling short in the two previous seasons, the Panthers completed a perfect 16-0, including their victory over Westlake for the Texas high school football Class 6A Division I state championship.

North Crowley’s title defense will start against Lancaster on August 28. A successful season for the Panthers would mean fantastic performances from interior offensive lineman John Turntine, cornerback Jerry Outhouse, safety Aaron Bradshaw, tight end Jeramie Cooper, and safety Elijajuan Houston.

4. North Shore Mustangs

The Mustangs have come frustratingly short of the state championship over the previous two seasons. After losing the 2023 state championship game to Duncanville, they took a step back and came up short versus Westlake in the state semifinals.

North Shore will begin the 2025 Texas high school football season against South Oak Cliff on August 29. Quarterback Kaleb Maryland (Utah State) will lead the offense, while four-star cornerback Chace Calicut (Georgia) and defensive lineman Zaqwaun Nunn (Louisiana Tech) will anchor the defense.

5. Southlake Carroll Dragons

The Dragons made it to the Texas high school football Class 6A Division 2 state championship game, only to lose to Vandegrift. Despite falling short, they’ve completed their 16th consecutive double-digit-win season.

Southlake Carroll will return to action against Midland on August 29. Quarterback Angelo Renda (Pitt) will facilitate an offense featuring interior lineman Tristan Dare (Michigan), running back Davis Penn, and wide receivers Brody Knowles and Brock Boyd (Ohio State). Meanwhile, kicker Gavin Strange will play his final high school football season before joining Duke.
