On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Ty Simpson will be Alabama‘s starting quarterback for the 2025 season. He later added on, revealing how Simpson was informed. Turns out, the announcement was made in front of the entire team on Monday.

“As @ClowESPN first reported, a source tells @On3sports Simpson and the team were informed of decision today,” Nakos said via X. “Lot of excitement around the building about the future of Keelon Russell, too.”

Simpson was competing alongside Austin Mack and Russell for the starting role. Mack has been with the program since Kalen DeBoer took over, following the head coach over from Washington. A depth chart might be required to confirm but it’s assumed Mack will be the primary backup.

And then Russell, someone who Nakos says Alabama is excited about. Russell was a Five-Star Plus+ prospect out of Duncanville (TX) and enters his true freshman season with an incredibly bright future. For now, he will have to watch from the sidelines.

Originally, DeBoer revealed to the media he planned on naming a starter following the second scrimmage of preseason camp, scheduled for Saturday. However, the news broke out a little early in Tuscaloosa. Simpson will be Alabama’s guy moving forward. To make matters better, he got a nice moment in front of the entire team.

More on new Alabama starting quarterback Ty Simpson

Simpson played high school football at Martin (TN) Westview, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 25 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Three years were spent watching from the sidelines. Simpson got to watch Bryce Young work as a true freshman before being the main backup to Jalen Milroe in 2024. In an era where plenty of guys are transferring out in search of playing time, Simpson decided to stay with Alabama.

No matter who was named the starter, a ton of skill position talent is set to be in Ryan Grubb‘s offense. Alabama projects to be one of the better wide receiver rooms in all of college football. Jam Miller is an experienced running back too, being the headliner in a room with some depth.

Simpson appears to be set up for success this season. How he goes out and executes is a completely different story. We will find out beginning Aug. 30 when Alabama goes on the road to face off against the Florida State Seminoles in the season opener.
