Tyrese Maxey is the new face of the Philadelphia 76ers with a $204M contract kicking in this season coming off his first NBA All-Star appearance in 2024. He needs to use $24.95 of that maximum salary buying an automatic can opener from Amazon — because the 24-year-old spent an hour on Monday trying to figure out how to use his old fashioned one and failed miserably.
Entering his sixth season in the NBA, Maxey took to Instagram Live to ask fans for help, proving he did not take home economics in his eight months on campus in Lexington.
“I don’t even get on (IG) Live, but I need your help. I need to feed my dogs. Normally (my) chef helps me use the can opener for my dogs. Tell me what I need to do,” he begged. “Somebody on here, help me out. Show me how to work this thing.”
Maxey then began stabbing the opener into the side of the can and slapping it on top, hoping a simple handle twist would magically open the lid. It did not.
The former Wildcat stressed that his personal chef was out of the house and neither his girlfriend, Myra Gordon, nor his mother, Denise Maxey, were around. Without them, he was totally helpless and comfortable admitting that.
“‘Dude doesn’t know how to use a can opener?’ No, I don’t. Sorry. I spent all my life working out. … Everybody over here trying to laugh, I’m being so serious. Everybody’s gone,” he continued. “Myra’s gone, chef’s gone, my mom’s not here. I’m trying to open this can.”
For some reason, he flipped the can upside down and thought that’d be an efficient way to open the dog food. Then he got it back rightside up and started stabbing the top with a knife? Watching his struggles unfold, one fan recommended he use DoorDash.
Probably a good call.
Maxey then took to Twitter to let the rest of the world in on his struggles that also include fixing his smoke alarm. So much for a relaxing day off playing video games, eh?
“Been on IG live the past hour… Trying to open a can, feed the dogs, and clean the dog room!” he wrote. “I’ll be back on around 9:30 to fix the smoke alarm and play video games for the first time in like 5 years.”
At long last, Maxey got it fixed — but blamed it on the can opener. He found a newer one and that one worked for him, apparently.
“I figured it out,” he said. “… That one was old. This one is new. It wasn’t me. Y’all tried to make it sound like I was the problem. I was not the problem. Whatever.”
Operator error, I’m afraid. At least he got the job done and his dogs are getting fed, though.
Former Kentucky wing Justin Edwards — Maxey’s current teammate in Philadelphia — was quick to tease him in a follow-up IG Live for some Cat on Cat crime.
“(You know) how to open a can now?” he joked.
Not your best moment, Franchise.
