Germany's Alexander Zverev eased into the third round of the Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over US wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy in his final tune-up before the US Open.

Seeded third, the 28-year-old broke serve twice in the first set and once in the second, wrapping up the match in 66 minutes with an ace. He will next face American Brandon Nakashima, who defeated Germany's Alexander Blockx 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Zverev, who had a first-round bye, is looking to rebound from last week's semifinal loss in Toronto, where he squandered a match point.

Earlier, Carlos Alcaraz overcame a tricky contest against world number 56 Damir Dzumhur to win 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

In other action, fifth seed Ben Shelton was also through to the third round after Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli retired at 6-3, 3-1 for the American.

Australia's Adam Walton delivered the shock of the tournament so far, defeating former world number one Daniil Medvedev 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 to book a spot in the third round, where he will face Jiri Lehecka.
