The Cincinnati Reds are 60–56 and currently just 3.5 games out of the third spot in the NL Wild Card race. With every remaining game crucial to the team’s hunt for their first playoff appearance since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, right-handed rookie Chase Burns has stepped into the rotation with ace Hunter Greene still sidelined.
The 22-year-old flamethrower was selected second overall just last year in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest and quickly rose through the minor leagues before his call-up in late June.
In an electric MLB debut against the New York Yankees, Burns struck out the first five hitters he faced.
Chase Burns Makes History on Friday
During Friday’s start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Burns etched his name into MLB history. The Reds announced that Burns had become the first player to ever strike out ten hitters in four of their first eight career starts.

Burns Gives Reds Crucial Boost in NL Wild Card Race
Burns’ numbers have been partially inflated due to his second start a rough outing in against the Boston Red Sox, in which he failed to get out of the first inning. Over his last five starts, he’s reached ten strikeouts four times, with the lone exception being a game against the Atlanta Braves that was rained out.
He finished Friday’s outing against the Pirates with six innings pitched, ten strikeouts, three hits and just one earned run allowed. Burns’ four 10-strikeout performances this season are tied for the fifth-most in all of baseball—a remarkable achievement considering his MLB debut came only 45 days ago.
Burns will look to continue piecing together dominant outings as the Reds search for a playoff berth.
