We think that we'd be pretty upset if we were Mets fans, too.
Mets Fans in Shambles After Failed Luis Robert Jr. Trade Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Amid a frustrating two-month stretch and a recent sweep at home, New York Mets fans are looking for anyone or anything to take their aggression out on.
MLB insider Jon Heyman provided an exhausted fan base with more ammunition on Friday afternoon, sharing that the Mets pursued Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. The problem isn’t that the Mets looked into acquiring Robert so much as it is who and what the Mets refused to give up.
Heyman reported that the Mets essentially made four players off-limits: third baseman Mark Vientos, infielder Luisangel Acuña, first baseman/third baseman Jacob Reimer, and second baseman/outfielder A.J. Ewing. Vientos has taken a significant step back in his third full season, though he remains a mainstay in the Mets’ starting lineup.
Social media users questioned the Mets’ reluctance to part ways with Acuña, a 23-year-old utilityman and former top-100 prospect. Ronald’s younger brother hit .239 with no homers, seven RBI, and a .578 OPS across 175 plate appearances in the majors this year. However, Acuña spent much of the first half on the big-league bench rather than receiving everyday at-bats at Triple-A.
“They completely stunted Acuña’s development by making him a utility player now he’s untouchable in a trade for Luis Robert?” one fan wrote on X/Twitter. “Make it make sense.”
Added another: “Not really sure what they see in Acuña. Speed & defense guys who can’t hit aren’t too hard to come by."
Acuña is batting .293 with four RBIs and a .701 OPS in 66 plate appearances at Triple-A Syracuse. With Roberts out of the equation, the Mets sent three pitching prospects to the Baltimore Orioles for center fielder Cedric Mullins.
Mullins, a 2023 All-Star and pending free agent, is 1-for-14 to start his Mets career.

“It’s obvious Robert [has] greater upside but at what cost?” a Mets fan asked. “Getting Mullins definitely wasn’t the answer.”
Robert has quietly upped his game over the last month, batting .400 with three home runs, 11 RBIs, nine stolen bases, and a 1.051 OPS in 15 second-half games. The White Sox are currently expected to pick up his $20 million team option for 2026.
“This literally doesn’t matter because [co-hitting coaches Jeremy Barnes and Eric Chávez] would turn Robert into a .300 OPS guy immediately,” an X user countered.
