Given how things looked Thursday night, Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson received good news on Friday morning regarding his injured throwing hand.
Colts Insider Reveals ‘Best-Case Scenario’ for Anthony Richardson After Gruesome Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Given the shock factor of the photos and videos that circulated on social media in the moments after Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson left Thursday’s preseason matchup against the Baltimore Ravens with a hand injury, Colts fans likely breathed a sigh of relief on Friday morning.
After taking a brutal hit from unblocked linebacker David Ojabo, Richardson told reporters he looked down as he tried to make sure he kept possession of the ball, and when he did, he couldn’t believe what he saw when he looked at the pinky finger on his throwing hand.
“It was weird,” Richardson stated. “He hit me, then I was trying to make sure I had the ball and I just looked down. I saw my finger in a different direction. I'm like, 'Maybe I'm tripping.' And I looked at it again. It was definitely like that.”
A follow-up X-ray less than 24 hours later confirmed that Richardson suffered a dislocated finger, but he likely wouldn’t miss much time and he presumably wasn’t in danger of missing the Colts’ Week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 7 — which as The Athletic’s James Boyd wrote is the best-case scenario for the Colts.
“Can confirm #Colts QB Anthony Richardson underwent X-rays on his dislocated right pinkie finger and the results came back clean, per sources,” Boyd wrote on X. “He’s day to day. Best-case scenario for Richardson, who avoids a major injury after taking a big hit.”

There was plenty of speculation on social media in the minutes after the injury about how much time Richardson could miss.
Given his concerning injury history—he’s missed 16 games over his first two seasons with multiple injuries including a concussion, a shoulder A/C joint sprain, a hip sprain, and a lower lumbar sprain — Colts fans were likely fearing the worst after seeing their presumed franchise QB leave the field yet again with the help of a medical staff.
But after the game, the former No. 4 overall pick revealed that Indianapolis’ medical staff had popped his finger back in place, and aside from the swelling that was sure to follow, he was optimistic he’d have a short timeline to return.
