Chelsea summer was going so smoothly.
They had signed good attackers, sold players they wanted to sell for a profit, and filled the hole in the squad at backup left back by signing Jorrel Hato.
But football never goes as smoothly as you hope, and a huge spanner was thrown into the works last week with the news that Levi Colwill would be out for the season after ACL surgery.
Blues sent scrambling by defensive injury
That’s thrown our defensive plans into disarray, exacerbating the uncertainty around Wesley Fofana, who in theory will be fit for this season, but simply can’t be relied upon.
The initial briefs were that the Blues wouldn’t look to strengthen, and would rely on what they have in house, but that never sounded convincing and Enzo Maresca all but admitted on Friday night after the friendly win over Bayer Leverkusen that he wanted to sign another player.
Chelsea dive back into their list of targets
Ronald Araujo in action for Barcelona.
This means that several old targets could be revived, and while we’ve all heard now that Marc Guehi is top of the list, watch out for Ronald Araujo too.
A report from Football Espana this week has claimed that Barcelona remain keen to raise funds through selling one of their top earners, and it’s easy to see Chelsea being tempted by an established top defender with great physical skills like the Uruguayan.
A price of €50m is listed – that seems pretty steep, but if the Catalan club are willing to sell we think we could get them far lower than that. We think the Blues will look for more of a bargain before they aim for a premium product like Araujo, but if it looks like it could be the line between a hugely successful season and a disappointment, don’t be surprised if they go all out.
