Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson left the Colts' preseason game vs. the Ravens with a gruesome-looking injury and didn't return.
Colts’ Anthony Richardson Suffers Gruesome-Looking Injury vs. Ravens originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered a finger injury to his throwing hand during the first quarter of their preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday evening. Early reports indicated that Richardson got his finger taped and attempted to throw on the sideline after it occurred, but it was announced soon after that Richardson would not return for the rest of the game.
The injury initially seemed concerning, but Richardson didn't appear to be in significant pain. However, a closer look from The Athletic’s James Boyd revealed that the injury looked far worse than what was shown on the broadcast, appearing to be a dislocation of the pinky finger on Richardson’s right hand. The video is linked below, but it might be difficult for some viewers to watch.

The injury occurred during a play that appeared to be a breakdown in pass protection, which seems like it was Richardson's fault. The link below is to a video from ex-NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz explaining why he thinks the fault rests with Richardson, emphasizing that the Colts quarterback should have recognized what protection his line would be in and watched for Simpson getting a free rush on the right side.

Plays like this highlight Richardson’s urgent need for more game reps, as mental mistakes are often corrected when quarterbacks get more on-field experience. His 14 games over two seasons have been a key reason he hasn’t had the chance to develop the mental side of his game.
If this injury keeps him out of practice for a prolonged period, his chances of winning this offseason’s quarterback competition against Daniel Jones look bleak.
The good news is that even though the injury appears severe, a dislocation can be a quick fix in some situations. Based on the training staff allowing Richardson to attempt throwing the ball on the sideline after he left the field, it seems likely that this won’t prevent Richardson from playing in next week’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.
If it's more severe than expected, however, you can essentially pencil Jones in as the starter for the 2025 season.
