Here's more on Mariano Rivera tearing his Achilles during the Yankees' 2025 "Old Timers Day" Game.
Mariano Rivera injury update: Yankees Hall of Famer tears Achilles during team's 'Old Timers Day' game originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Yankees brought back Old Timers' Day for the first time since 2019. The day is intended to be a friendly game between the greats of past Yankees teams. It helps to honor the legends while also giving fans a glimpse at some of the best players in team history in Pinstripes once again.
The concern with these games is that someone may push too hard, and freak accidents are unfortunately known to occur. Unfortunately, Yankees Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera didn't come out of this year's game unscathed.
Rivera tore his Achilles in the Old Timers' Game. He is known for his career longevity, which he attributes to his ability to avoid major injuries. The lone exception was when he had a freak ACL tear while shagging balls in the outfield in 2012. That pushed his retirement year back one season, and he hung up his cleats after the 2013 season.

The closer then crumpled in the outfield during the bottom half of the inning. Rivera got up, took a step, but then fell again.
Roger Clemens stated that players believed Rivera was dealing with a hamstring injury, but it turned out to be much more severe. Notably, Derek Jeter has long said that he would never play in the Old Timers' Game because he said he would be too worried he would get hurt.
Rivera's agent Fernando Cuza confirmed that the former closer had torn his Achilles.
