After defeating the Chicago White Sox in extra innings on Thursday, the Seattle Mariners are currently sitting at 63–53, in sole possession of the second AL Wild Card spot and just two losses behind the AL West-leading Houston Astros.
Sensing the American League was up for grabs, the Mariners’ front office swung big before the trade deadline, making one of the biggest early moves by acquiring Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 28-year-old first baseman fit exactly what Seattle needed, inserting himself immediately and producing in the middle of the lineup.
Naylor also became the second player in Mariners history with 2+ stolen bases and 1+ home run in consecutive games, joining Ichiro Suzuki (Sept. 8–9, 2011), the team announced on Wednesday.
Mariners Slugger Josh Naylor Removed From Game
Although he is off to a hot start over his first 13 games with Seattle, Naylor's momentum may be briefly halted. During Thursday’s game against the White Sox, Naylor was removed in the top of the fourth inning and replaced by teammate Donovan Solano.
He appeared to injure himself on an uncomfortable swing. While Seattle would go on to win in extra innings, fans were anxious to hear a Naylor update, as the Mariners remained silent on his health status for the remainder of the contest.

However, fortunately for fans, the Mariners announced encouraging news postgame via manager Dan Wilson that the All-Star first baseman is day-to-day with shoulder soreness (via Daniel Kramer of MLB.com).
For now, it seems Seattle's big trade deadline addition has avoided any serious injury, which is huge for the Mariners as they pursue a spot in October baseball. Naylor has dealt with injuries in his career, but seems to have avoided one here.
Mariners Betting Big on Naylor as October Nears
Throughout Naylor’s seven-year career, he’s spent time with four organizations, but he truly peaked during his stint with the Cleveland Guardians, where he earned his first All-Star selection in 2024.
Between the Diamondbacks and Mariners in 2025, he is batting .290 with an .810 OPS, 14 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases. Naylor is set to earn a lucrative contract after another outstanding year at the plate and is just entering his physical prime.
With Seattle eyeing a return to the postseason for the first time since 2022, Naylor’s availability will be crucial to the team's success moving forward.
