The Pittsburgh Steelers have traveled to EverBank Stadium to play the Jacksonville Jaguars to open the preseason, and kicker Chris Boswell won't be available.
Boswell is coming off a career year in 2024, as the veteran led the league in field goals made (41) and posted a 93.2% field goal hit rate. The 34-year-old also went 13 of 15 from 50-plus yards and missed just one kick from 30 to 49 yards, earning first-team All-Pro honors for his play on the field.
Though Boswell is one of the best players at his position in the sport, he's also one of the most underpaid, which is why he is actively seeking a new deal from the Steelers.
Latest on Chris Boswell's contract status
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Thursday that Boswell has privately asked for a new contract. The two-time Pro Bowler has a base salary of just $3.1 million in 2025 and is outside of the top-ten highest-paid kickers in the NFL.
"All-Pro kicker Chris Boswell privately has been seeking a new contract from the Steelers, per source. Despite being voted first team All-Pro, Boswell was the AFC North’s lowest-paid kicker last season," Schefter said on X.
Since Boswell signed a four-year extension worth $20 million with the Steelers in 2022, the kicker marker has risen, something Schefter also adds.
"Three years ago Boswell signed a contract that tied him with Justin Tucker as the NFL’s highest-paid kicker; but that market also has been reset the past two years," Schefter said.
Boswell will not play in Friday's preseason opener in Jacksonville, and hasn't been practicing much this summer. Ray Fittipaldo of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette even said that Boswell has spent more time on the golf course than the practice field this offseason, which could have a direct correlation to his contract situation.
"Boz [Boswell] has spent more time playing golf at Laurel Valley than he's spent on the St Vincent practice fields this summer," Fittipaldo said on 93.7 The Fan recently (H/T Andrew Fillipponi on X)
Pittsburgh has some time to get something done with their kicker ahead of the 2025 season. However, Boswell's new deal will likely have to be worth more than $6.4 million annually, which is what the current highest-paid kicker, Kansas City Chiefs star Harrison Butker, is making on his contract.
