With 18 seasons and two World Series rings under his belt, we trust that Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer knows a legitimate title contender when he sees one.

And although Scherzer has only pitched 41 innings for the AL East-leading Blue Jays, he’s already figured out what makes this year’s Toronto team special.

“There’s no jerks,” Scherzer told The Athletic.

We’re sure that NHL legend and longtime Canadian hockey analyst Don Cherry approves of Scherzer using the term “jerks.” That’s how you know that Scherzer, a St. Louis native who has spent most of his career in Washington and Detroit, has truly embraced Canada.

In all seriousness, Scherzer’s commentary comes amid what’s become an incredibly memorable summer in Toronto. The Blue Jays are 38-20 since the start of June and lead the Boston Red Sox by four games in the AL East.

Numerous Blue Jays players, along with manager John Schneider and general manager Ross Atkins, praised the team’s chemistry and revamped offensive strategy. Toronto has 15 players who already have at least 100 at-bats, several of whom are utilitymen capable of playing the infield and outfield.

“Everybody really wanted to fix everything, and they wanted a total overhaul of operations,” Scherzer explained.

“It’s tough to know how bad the past was,” Scherzer continued. “I just get to see what the changes are, and right now this is a well-functioning team in every facet.”

Scherzer gets an opportunity to continue the Blue Jays’ fun when he faces Clayton Kershaw and his former Los Angeles Dodgers teammates on Friday night. Toronto’s .586 winning percentage leads all American League teams.
