The Indiana Fever will be looking to get back to winning ways on Thursday when they return to action in a road matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. The Fever suffered their first loss in six games on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Sparks, 100-91, and they are now eager to get back to the win column.
DeWanna Bonner to Face Former Team
One of the biggest storylines surrounding the Fever-Mercury matchup on Thursday centers around six-time All-Star DeWanna Bonner, who took to Instagram on the eve of the game to share some photos of her outfit from the last time she faced off against her former team.
Bonner’s pictures were from the Mercury’s road game against the Fever on July 30 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. That was the first time Bonner got to face off against the Fever following her controversial exit earlier in the month.
Bonner signed with the Fever as a free agent during the offseason. However, she ended up playing just nine games before deciding to take a leave from the team mid-season. This ultimately led to the Fever waiving Bonner’s contract, which allowed her to eventually sign with the Mercury, the same team she suited up for in her first decade in the league.
Natasha Howard Reacts to Bonner’s Post
One of the players Bonner got the chance to play with during her brief stint in Indiana was Natasha Howard, who was also an offseason recruit for the Fever. Howard, the reigning Commissioner’s Cup MVP, reacted to Bonner's latest post with a wordless comment.
“❤️❤️❤️” she wrote.
Bonner and Howard are both stalwarts in the WNBA who have won multiple championships between them. While both are now in the latter stages of their respective careers, they got the opportunity to share the same frontcourt in Indiana. Unfortunately, their time together turned out to be short-lived.
Fever Fans Have Beef With Bonner
Howard clearly has nothing but love for her former Fever teammate. The same, however, cannot be said for the Indiana faithful.
On July 30, in Bonner’s return to Indianapolis following her controversial departure, the Fever fans made their feelings about her abundantly clear. The two-time All-WNBA guard-forward was savagely booed by the capacity crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, which was met with mixed reactions across the WNBA world.
Bonner’s Mercury teammate, Kahleah Copper, had some strong words for the behavior shown by the Fever supporters. Copper claimed that Bonner deserves respect, labelling the jeering as “distasteful.”
