Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has reshaped the WNBA’s worldwide appeal in just her second year in the league. Despite being limited to just 13 games this season, Clark averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game before being sidelined with a groin injury. The injury, suffered in mid-July, has now kept her out for eight straight games with no clear timetable for her return.

Nevertheless, Clark remains the most talked-about player in women’s basketball — from national broadcasts to viral clips, her impact continues to generate headlines. The buzz around her influence hasn’t slowed, even as recovery delays her return to the court.

Jeff Teague Faces Backlash Over Caitlin Clark Comments

Among those who have not shied from speaking about Clark is former NBA guard Jeff Teague, who has continued to draw attention for his basketball commentaries and stories on his popular Club 520 podcast. Teague weighed in on Clark’s WNBA career during an episode of his podcast, noting that “she [is] good, but she [is] not that good.”

However, his remarks quickly circulated on social media, drawing heavy criticism from WNBA fans who argued that he was downplaying Clark’s success and overall impact.

WNBA legend Nancy Lieberman joined the growing list of critics, publicly firing back at Teague during a recent episode of the Big3’s 3 and One Podcast with Chris Haynes and Michael Beasley. Lieberman noted that Teague himself wasn’t a great player and isn’t in the best place to judge Clark:

“Jeff, I love you but you weren’t a great player. You were serviceable,” Lieberman said. “I know you made the All-Star team one time ... I’m sorry, if we’re gonna be honest, I’m happy for your career but she is great.”

Her blunt response echoed what many around the league have been saying — that Clark’s critics often overlook her contributions while offering dismissive takes. Lieberman’s remarks has since been widely praised online as a much-needed defense of Clark’s game and her influence.

Lieberman Has Always Been Supportive of Caitlin Clark

This isn’t the first time Nancy Lieberman has voiced support for Clark. In July, she urged other WNBA players to stop being “petty” toward Clark, calling her the best guard in the league. Lieberman has consistently spoken out against what she sees as unfair criticism, asking fans and peers to “embrace” Clark’s presence and acknowledge the good she’s doing for the league.

Clark, meanwhile, remains sidelined, and while the Fever haven’t set a return date, coach Stephanie White noted that the team is in no rush. Indiana continues to focus on her long-term health rather than speeding her back into action. A return sometime in August remains possible, but not guaranteed.
