Shedeur Sanders ‘probably’ would’ve been traded instead of Dillon Gabriel if Browns wanted deal

The Cleveland Browns would've more likely traded Shedeur Sanders than Dillon Gabriel had they wanted a deal this offseason.

CBS Sports’ John Breech doesn’t believe the Cleveland Browns would’ve parted with Dillon Gabriel in a trade this offseason, despite the Athletic’s report that Andrew Berry fielded multiple offers for him from teams.

Breech believes Shedeur Sanders would’ve been the Browns quarterback traded instead.

“Without knowing what the Browns were offered, it's impossible to say whether they made a good decision, but getting rid of at least one quarterback would have certainly made some sense. That being said, the Browns used a higher pick on Gabriel, which would seemed to indicate that they liked him more at the time, so if they had been willing to trade anyone at that point, Sanders probably would have been the guy to go,” Breech wrote.

Breech believes a big preseason from either Sanders or Gabriel could still get one of them traded.

“The Browns might have turned down trade offers two months ago, but it will be interesting to see if they're open to a trade in late August. If Sanders or Gabriel has a big preseason, it might be worth dangling the guy who struggles in trade talks,” Breech wrote.

Damned in Berea if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

While some say Sanders can get himself moved with a good preseason, others suggest a bad preseason may be the end of the line for his NFL career.

“If Sanders doesn't succeed in a difficult spot, it might be a while before he gets another chance this good, though that might depend on the health of the quarterbacks around him. His one big impression before the regular season begins might be a preseason start in which it will be a huge challenge for him to play well,” Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab wrote.

Sanders gets his first chance against the Carolina Panthers as Cleveland’s starting QB on Friday night.

It’s unclear how many more of his or Gabriel’s chances will come in a Browns uniform.
