Behind Enemy Lines: Get the inside scoop on Arizona before the Chiefs face the Cardinals

Get the inside scoop on Arizona before the Chiefs face the Cardinals in this Q&A with Jess Root of Cards Wire.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals will face off in a preseason exhibition on August 9 after weeks of intense preparation at their respective training camps.

Arizona ended its 2024 campaign with an 8-9 record and failed to qualify for the NFC playoffs. Led by star quarterback Kyler Murray, the Cardinals will look to change their fortunes this season, starting with a win over the reigning AFC champions in Week 1 of the NFL's preseason.

Before Saturday's game, Jess Root of Cards Wire was kind enough to give us the inside scoop on Arizona.

Take a look at what Root had to say about the Cardinals:

Who have been the Cardinals’ top standouts at training camp?

Arizona Cardinals receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (18) works out during the team's practice at State Farm Stadium on July 29, 2025.

"Receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Zay Jones have looked good. New starting right guard Isaiah Adams has been really good and earned specific praise from HC Jonathan Gannon.

CB Garrett Williams has been getting outside reps after playing almost exclusively in the slot his first two season."

Which position battle has been the most important/compelling at training camp?

"Honestly, there have been a couple — receiver and cornerback. At receiver, the No. 3 role was uncertain, but Zay Jones seems to have really solidified himself.

At cornerback, we know the three who will play — Garrett Williams, Max Melton and rookie Will Johnson. We just don't know who will be the top two in base defenses."

What aspect of Arizona’s offense or defense will be the most impactful this year?

Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell (93) watches his teammates from the sideline during Cardinals training camp at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, on July 31, 2025.

"They should be so much stronger up front. They added Calais Campbell and Dalvin Tomlinson on the interior. Justin Jones returns from a three-game season. Darius Robinson is healthy after a basically lost rookie year. They added Josh Sweat on the edge and brought back Baron Browning."

What are your expectations for the Cardinals this season?

Arizona Cardinals players perform a drill during training camp at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Aug. 6, 2025.

"They were a perfectly mediocre team last year who had a chance for the postseason. With the exception of their loss to the Carolina Panthers late in the season, all their losses were to playoff teams or teams with at least 10 wins. They won eight games, will be at least as good on offense and should be significantly better on defense. They should win double-digit games and make the playoffs."
