A new season of Washington high school football will begin this month. At the forefront of the competition are the state’s top 25 teams, ranging from dynasties to emerging powers. Here’s how Massey ranked the teams during the final days of preseason.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. O’Dea Fighting Irish

The Fighting Irish gained redemption after completing a perfect 13-0 season. That flawless standing includes their victory over Bellevue for the Washington high school football Class 3A state championship.

O’Dea’s title defense will start against Graham-Kapowsin on September 5. The Fighting Irish will rely on four-star defensive lineman Tevita Nonu, edge rusher Fameitau Siale (Michigan State), interior offensive lineman Kingston Fotualii (Washington State), two-way athlete Giulio Banchero (Eastern Washington), and defensive lineman David Schwerzel (UCLA).

2. Bellevue Wolverines

The Wolverines had a promising season after winning their first 12 games. However, O’Dea stole their thunder by defeating them in the Washington high school football Class 3A state championship game. Bellevue hopes to regain the state title it won in 2023. Their schedule starts against Bethel on September 5.

3. Camas Papermakers

The Papermakers cruised to a 13-0 record, only to lose to Sumner in the Washington high school football Class 4A state championship game. After falling short of the title, tight end Seager Milholen and the entire Camas team will begin their quest against Roosevelt on September 6.

4. Sumner Spartans

After losing to Oregon’s West Linn, the Spartans went on an 11-game winning streak, including their victory over Camas for the Washington high school football Class 4A state championship. Sumner’s title defense will start against Lake Stevens on September 5. Four-star wide receiver Braylon Pope and cornerback Israel Nabors are some of their top players.

5. Eastside Catholic Crusaders

While the Crusaders lost only two of 13 games last season, they dropped them to the same team. O’Dea defeated them in their fourth game and the Washington high school football Class 3A state semifinals.

Eastside Catholic will have a rematch against O’Dea on September 26. However, before that game, the Crusaders will open the season against Utah’s East Leopards on September 5. Three-star linebacker Wassie Lugolobi, three-star wide receiver Asa Thompson, tight end Tytan McNeal, and safety Elias Tulifua will lead the way.
