This is tough.

Angel Reese will sit out for a third straight game on Tuesday as the Chicago Sky take on the Washington Mystics in a home matchup at Wintrust Arena. The two-time All-Star has been dealing with a lingering back injury that will now force her to sit out for the fifth time in six games.

Chicago Sky Coach Tyler Marsh’s Angel Reese Update

Sky head coach Tyler Marsh spoke to reporters ahead of the Mystics game and was asked about Reese’s status. After revealing earlier in the day that the 23-year-old is also dealing with an illness on top of her back issue, the rookie shot-caller provided an update on Reese’s timetable.

"There isn't a concrete timetable,” Marsh revealed. “It's to the extent that I know. It's the back injury and she continues to be day-to-day.

"I mentioned earlier that she wasn't here for shootaround due to an illness. I think she's progressing but still kind of wait and see."

The big takeaway here is that while Reese has shown improvements, the Sky have not provided a timetable for her return. This suggests that she could be out for an extended period.

Sky Have Struggled Badly

Chicago will be looking for its first win in nine games on Tuesday. This team has lost eight in a row, and this latest development regarding Reese comes at a terrible time for the Sky.

They enter the Mystics game with a 7-21 record, which is second-to-last in the WNBA. The Sky are currently just 1.5 games ahead of the league-worst Connecticut Sun, and at this point, Chicago is in real danger of finishing at the bottom at the end of the season.

As of writing, the Sky are also a full seven games outside the playoff picture. According to ESPN’s Basketball Power Index, Chicago owns the worst odds of making the playoffs across the entire WNBA at just 0.1%.

It is also worth noting that the Sky have a 1-10 record without Reese in her first two seasons - showing how important she has been for her squad.

In 23 games this season, Reese has averaged 14.2 points on 44.4% shooting, a league-best 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals in 31.7 minutes per contest.
