Detroit Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw is out for the season. The team placed him on the injured reserve on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Rakestraw suffered a shoulder injury during Saturday’s practice in training camp. Coach Dan Campbell addressed the injury at the time, noting “it’s going to be a while” before Rakestraw returned to the field.

Unfortunately, further testing revealed that the injury would require season-ending surgery. Ennis Rakestraw posted a short video of himself in hospital attire on his Instagram account on Thursday morning.

Rakestraw was the Lions’ 2024 second-round draft pick from Missouri. During his rookie season in 2024, Rakestreaw appeared in eight games where he logged six tackles.

The Lions DB missed time last season while nursing a hamstring injury. He was eventually placed on the injured reserve list in November but appeared to be healthy heading into training camp.

Ennis Rakestraw was suited up against the Los Angeles Chargers last weekend during the Hall of Fame Game. He recorded one tackle during the 34-7 loss. Now, it appears he’ll be shut down for the season.

“You hate it for the kid. You hate it,” Campbell said. “It’s not his fault, just one of those tough deals.”

In a corresponding move, the Lions picked up CB Luq Barcoo. Barcoo last saw regular season action for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, logging 10 total tackles during three appearances. He was most recently signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

The Lions have 10 cornerbacks, including Ennis Rakestraw, listed on their current roster including Terrion Arnold in his second season from Alabama. They lost their second-most productive corner in Carlton Davis III, who is signed to the New England Patriots this season, but retain Amik Robertson who had arguably just as good of a season.
