Enzo Maresca has revealed that he is concerned about an injury suffered in training by central defender Levi Colwill.
The 22-year-old was an ever-present for the Blues last season, playing 43 times in all competitions including in his side’s Club World Cup campaign.
But ahead of Chelsea’s late start to pre-season following their Club World Cup victory, Maresca says Colwill could be set for a spell out.
“We had a problem in the last two days with Levi Colwill and we don’t know how long he is going to be out,” he said ahead of Chelsea’s friendly against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday.
“We’ll see, hopefully not too long, but for sure it’s a problem for us.
“We need to wait. We don’t know yet.
“It was the first session on Monday, just in the last minutes of the session. He felt something and as I said, we need to wait and then we’ll see.”
Maresca also did not rule out Chelsea going into the transfer market to sign more defensive reinforcements should Colwill be set for a long spell on the sidelines.
“It depends,” he said. “We need to wait and then we’ll see but as I said. We know how important Levi has been.
“I spoke with him yesterday and I told him if we achieve what we achieved last year, it’s also because of him.
“He was a main player for us.”
In a boost for Chelsea, however, Maresca also revealed fellow central defender Wesley Fofana is back in training having played just 14 times last season because of a hamstring injury.
“Wes is back,” he said. “He’s training with us. I don’t think he’s ready to get minutes in the next two games but he can probably be available for the Palace game and this is big news.
“We start last season, the first five or six months, with Wes and Levi, our two central defenders.”
